Antimicrobial Activity of Lawsonia inermis L. Extracts

Antibacterial activity was tested for three Hena ( Lawsonia inermis L.) extracts , These extracts including hot ethanolic 70% extract , flavonoid extract and oil extract , they were tested against five bacterial species including Escherechia coli , Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Streptococcus spp, Klebsella pneumoniae . And The antifungal activity evaluated against (Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger ) .
The results showed that flavonoid extract exhibited best antimicrobial activity followed by hot ethanolic 70% extract, while oil extract showed no antimicrobial activity .
In addition the flavonoid extract has been separated to precipitate and supernatant and study its antibacterial activity against (E.coli, S.aureus). The precipitate portion exhibited highest activity(38mm) against S.aureus and (32mm)against E.coli.
The flavonoid components extract was examined by thin layer chromatography which showed that the flavonid extract was composed of four components, these components were separated quantity by using column chromatography, each separated component was tested for antibacterial activity against (E.coli, S.aureus).
The component (III) revealed moderate antibacterial activity(17mm)against ( S.aureus), (14mm) against(E.coli )and the component(IIII) revealed (8,7mm) respectively , while components(I, II) showed no antibacterial activity .

Effect of different Pollens on Some Characteristics of Date Palm Phoenix dactylifera L. Cvs. Bream and Kahdrawi

The present study was carried out during the growth season (2008) in Alhartha( Abu skhair) a region in Basrah, two male cultivars were used ( Ghanamy akhdar, Khikri adi & Mixture of both of them) to pollinate Bream & Kahdrawi female cultivars. Ghanamy akhdar had the significant effect in increasing average fruit weight at kahlal stage(8.09 ) gm , average mesocarp weight(7.10 ) gm and average seed weight (1.03 ) gm compared to other pollens treatments. Ghanamy akhdar also increased average fruit diameter (20.92 ) mm , average fruit length (30.58 ) mm and average fruit size(7.53 cm3) , Ghanamy akhdar increased percentage total sugar (57.16)% , percentage reducing sugar(36.64)%, percentage sucrose(18.02)%, average dry weight(2.06) gm & percentage total soluble solid (23.63)%.
Bream cultivar had the highest fruit total characteristics compared to Kahdrawi such as percentage of total sugar(55.48)%, percentage reducing sugar (39.94)% , percentage sucrose(15.85)% , average dry weight(1.97)gm , average seed weight(0.87) gm and average mesocarp weight(6.12) gm .
Ghanamy akhdar percentage reduced fruit abscission to (11.69)% , whereas Bream cultivar percentage lower fruit abscission (17.93)% compared Kahdrawi cultivar.
